Students in grade five at Daniel Wright follow an elementary school schedule with students attending class with one teacher for the half of the day, then going to "Creative Arts" with other teachers. Key activities during the fifth grade include visits to Camp Henry Horner, Colonial days, and Fraction Cafe. In sixth grade, students work through a modified middle school schedule and see different teachers for a variety of subjects. Students in the 6th grade attend Outdoor Education, a three day experience to build morale and educate students about events outdoors. In seventh grade, students attend a traditional junior high school schedule with students moving from class to class throughout the day. In this year, students are exposed to the Spanish language. During the final year at Daniel Wright, students work with teachers toward transitioning to high school and attend a trip to Springfield, IL, study American history, and work through a variety of Creative Arts courses.
The curriculum at Daniel Wright Junior High School focuses on students' skill development in core academic areas and extends beyond these to include music, fine arts, foreign language, physical education/health, clubs, athletics and community service. The curriculum envelops social/emotional learning as well as national educational technology standards. The school differentiates instruction to meet individual student needs through the Enrichment Learning Model (ELM). This approach, in addition to Response to Intervention initiatives, combines with the instructional program to help form successful learners.
The 2008 Illinois District and School Report Cards, based on results from the Illinois Standards Achievement Tests (ISATs) administered in March 2008, confirm recognition of School District 103 as one of the highest academically performing elementary school districts in the state.[1]
Daniel Wright Junior High School participates in the Patriots Athletic Conference with other feeder/sender schools to Adlai E. Stevenson High School District 125, which include Aptakisic Junior High, Twin Groves Middle School and Woodlawn Middle School.
